It’s a common case that happens every year. An artiste pops this year, two to three records which gain popularity, a few collaborations with the heavyweights, a co-sign from one of them.
A record deal comes into the picture and the artiste is predicted to become an established act in the next few months. But then, a surprise, The following year, the artiste completely goes off the radar.
Amongst the multitudes of songs that drop, theirs fail to receive mass listenership and gradually, they begin to lose a foothold of the influence they gained last year.
On the back of pioneering a genre, a Wizkid co-signs that produced a single, “Gucci Snake“, Slimcase was expected to extend. And with the buzz that followed Azaman, Slimcase, we thought won’t end up as a one-hit-wonder.
But then, he’s faded off. He’s not been visible and Zlatan‘s rise has contributed to that decline and we wonder, What happened to OtunbaLamba?
Port Harcourt king came back to the industry in a rush that surprised many. WizKid had reached out to him and together they created magic if that’s the exact word to describe it. Fake Lovedominated the airwaves in the first quarter of 2018 and the popularity of that record made artistes notice the impact Duncan Mighty could wield on songs.
Not even a “hit” record attributed to him so far this year compared to 2018 when he was busy scoring hit songs.
3. Chinko Ekun
Perhaps, with the buzz around Able God, we thought that would be the song that will turn around the fortunes of ChinkoEkun.
ChinkoEkun failed to sustain that momentum and then, the spotlight has been focused away from him and you’ll be right if you term him as a one-hit-wonder.
4. Victor AD
Should Victor be on this list? He released an EP, He had a song with Davido. He was also nominated for the Headies.
You’ll say this. But has he been able to re-create the wave of “Wetin You Gain“? which was one of those viral records that lasted long in the mainstream. None of his recent records have popped.
He released an EP next which was a bad move considering he had barely used two years in the industry. Right now, the questions on everyone’s lips is, What happened to the Victor AD that sang Wetin We Gain.
From the success of Shepeteri and with a record deal with the biggest label in Nigeria, DMW, many tipped him for greatness. But if a sound style becomes too repetitive, the music sphere gets tired and moves on to another artiste offering a fresh, unique sound.
He stuck to his guns, still recreating music from the same Shepeteri sound. We all reached diminishing marginal utility point and how many knew Idowest released an album this year. Most didn’t. He has made low-quality music this year and it’s so painful to see an artiste we put so much faith in failing to turn up.
