The Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU), Professor Ayo Akinwole kicks against Government move to reopen schools, without taking responsibility to ensure COVID 19 protocols are followed.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, noted that there have been agitations from some government quarters for the reopening of schools. These agitations according to them, were led by the Private schools and school owners. ASUU is not opposed to this call.
However, Professor Ayo Akinwole warns that the business importance and the profit of the schools gotten from accommodating and educating students is not worth more than the lives of the students themselves and their lecturers.
ASUU further said that Nigerians should be honest with themselves and ask themselves some questions.
Has the Federal Government met the NCDC criteria on COVID 19 protocols in our institutions?
Is it mandatory to endanger our students?
Are the reasons for this agitation not based on their yearning to save their pockets?
If the students are not alive and well, will they be able to fill the pockets you are eager to endanger their lives in order to fill?
Honestly, COVID 19 still stands strong in Nigeria, their statement said.
Akinwole went on to say, “We simply say that the Federal Government should follow its on set guidelines on the COVID 19 protocols.
As a responsible Union, we say that this is a rash action. Reopening schools in the midst of all this crisis and tragedy will simply increase the number of COVID 19 cases persistently in a way that has never been experienced before.
Whenever this happens, Nigeria should remember that they were forewarned”.
